The Central Okanagan Search and Rescue (COSAR) Society is a group of dedicated, like-minded, unpaid volunteers that donates it’s time and use of personal equipment in order to be able to serve the public in various capacities. In any given year, COSAR members provide upwards of 7,000 service hours of their time and are available 24/7.
COSAR is one of over 80 community-based Search and Rescue (SAR) groups within British Columbia. Our small dedicated group is part of the larger SAR community within the province which has over 2,500 trained professional members. The cost to replace this volunteer service in direct salary dollars alone would exceed $5,000,000 annually (excluding infrastructure and capital costs, which are estimated at over 50 million dollars). To learn more about SAR within the province, please visit the website of the British Columbia Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA).
In order to serve our community, COSAR requires up-to-date equipment. To provide an effective safe response, COSAR needs to maintain its equipment and to provide continuous training to its members. Currently, a portion of these expenses are generously subsidized by annual funding from the Central Okanagan Regional District (CORD) through a donation in kind. These monies ensure that fixed costs incurred in maintaining this critical Emergency response service are covered. In addition to acquiring new equipment to enhance our capabilities, COSAR is constantly in need to replace old worn out or damaged equipment.
Over the years, we have received donations from various parties. Including local community-based groups such as Rotary International, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, and Central Okanagan Foundation; others from Corporations and local businesses such as Fortis BC, The Keg Restaurant and Steak House and Winn Rentals, and often from private individuals or direct recipients of our services. All donations received, being monies or product(s) are eligible for a tax-deductible receipt. COSAR does not solicit donations via e-mail, door-to-door, or by telephone.
Your donation is greatly appreciated. If you wish to send a cash gift, please make it payable to the Central Okanagan Search and Rescue. If you would like give a different type of donation, please contact us at the following address:
