Mutual Aid: Missing Sledders

Great news out of the North Okanagan: the two snowmobilers missing in Hunters Range since Wednesday have been located, deep in a ravine, and teams are currently working on a technical extrication. While the incident fell within Vernon Search and Rescue’s response area, COSAR was proud to support our neighbours today alongside Shuswap SAR and many dedicated members of the Hunters Range, Lumby, and Silver Star snowmobile clubs. One of the local clubs was tasked into the highest-risk terrain under SAR command, and that community expertise proved decisive in making the find just after 2 p.m. So far this 2025/26 winter season, COSAR has responded to one snowmobile-related search in our own region, but incidents like today’s remind us how quickly things can escalate anywhere in the Interior backcountry. Important reminder for everyone heading out: –You do NOT have to wait to call for help. If you’re overdue, injured, lost, or even just concerned, call 911 immediately. –In B.C., ground search and rescue is provided entirely by trained volunteers and is free. –File a trip plan, carry satellite communication (cell coverage is spotty to non-existent in most of our riding zones), travel with proper avalanche gear, and check Avalanche Canada before you leave. Huge thanks to VSAR for leading an outstanding operation and to the snowmobile community for stepping up once again.
